If you want to create perfectly straight lines, all you need to do is hold Shift while following Step 3 instructions. Step 4 — Depending on the path you want to create be it a precise path, a sharp corner, a solid square, and so on , keep clicking and releasing on your Artboard to create continuing Anchors linked with one another.

Step 5 — If you want to use these paths to create a particular shape, you must close the entire path by connecting the last anchor point to the original anchor point. Once you do that, the ending point will be filled black, making it easier for you to know the point where you started and where you finished. Drawing curved lines is not as easy as drawing simple straight line segments.

However, it will be helpful to know how to use this feature if you want to create silhouettes and shapes, make a Clipping Mask, and so on. Step 2: Position the pen tip on your Artboard where you want the curve to begin and hold down the mouse button. Step 3: Once you do that, the first Anchor Point will appear. You will notice that the pen tip will change to an arrowhead. Step 4: Now it is time to drag handles to set the slope of the curve line you want to make and extend direction lines while keeping the mouse button pressed.

You will have to repeat the steps above and remember to drag the arrowhead to create a direction handle before releasing and eventually creating a curved line. Step 6: To adjust the curve, click on the handle and move it around until you are satisfied with how the curve looks. Instead of starting over, you can simply edit the curve lines you have created in various ways.

We will now look into how you can improve your lines and save time in the process. Remember that you can always edit paths using the Anchor Point Tool, which is perfect for editing paths. Select the path and the Anchor Point tool to edit the curve you have created. Then, click and drag on the anchor point to edit. For instance, you can turn a corner to curve segments or change geometric shapes and turn them into custom shapes.

Adding and removing anchor points is super easy with the Pen Tool. All you have to do is select the Pen Tool with a plus sign to add Anchor Points, or the one with the minus sign to remove anchor points. Step 3: Click on the path with the plus sign to add new Anchor Points, or the one with the minus sign to add or delete existing anchor points.

Another thing I realized while I’m working is that, to deselect you can go to ‘Black Arrow’, or hit the ‘V’ key. The shortcut I use the most is holding the ‘Command’ key down. You can see, we get the ‘Black Arrow’, and just click off in the background.

So while I’m drawing– let’s say we want to draw this line. So click once, I’m using the Curvature Tool, click once. I’ve got just a nice curve. It keeps on joining, so hold ‘Command’ and just click off in the background so I can start again.

And again, it’s going to really want to join that line. So if I zoom right in, holding ‘space bar’ to click and hold, and drag this around. Just going to start, kind of exaggerate this. I’m going to try avoid this line here. Click once, click once. Go to ‘Curvature Tool’. Built for making weird flowers. Click off in the background. A lot of things overlap, and it’s not very nice. Nice little easy trick is, I’m selecting it all with my ‘Black Arrow’, holding down the ‘Alt’ key, or ‘Option’ key on a Mac and just making a duplicate.

And with it selected, just go over to ‘Stroke’ and pick something down here where it says Profile. Let’s pick something nicer, like this first one here, the ‘Width Profile’.

Just gives it a nice kind of hand drawn look. I’ve bumped mine up to ‘3pt’. Looks a bit better. Like I said, Shape Builder Tool we’re going to make this, fill it in, and do some cool colors. The Pen tool and the Curvature tool display a preview of the path that will be drawn from the previous anchor point to the current position of the pointer. Using the Pen tool or the Curvature tool, click once on the artboard to draw a smooth point, and drag the mouse to create the handles as required.

Note: When you draw a smooth point, the opposite handles are always equal and paired. Release the mouse button. When you move the mouse pointer across the artboard, a path is displayed indicating what will be drawn if you choose to drop an anchor point at the location of the mouse pointer.

This is the same action as hitting the keyboard shortcut P while working with the Pen tool with the preview feature off. The Pencil tool lets you draw open and closed paths as if you were drawing with a pencil on paper. It is most useful for fast sketching or creating a hand-drawn look. Once you draw a path, you can immediately change it if needed. Anchor points are set down as you draw with the Pencil tool; you do not determine where they are positioned. However, you can adjust them once the path is complete.

The number of anchor points set down is determined by the length and complexity of the path and by tolerance settings in the Pencil Tool Preferences dialog box. These settings control how sensitive the Pencil tool is to the movement of your mouse or graphics-tablet stylus.

Click and hold the Shaper tool. Select the Pencil tool. Position the tool where you want the path to begin, and drag to draw a path. The Pencil tool displays a small x to indicate drawing a freeform path. As you drag, a dotted line follows the pointer. Anchor points appear at both ends of the path and at various points along it. The path takes on the current stroke and fill attributes, and remains selected by default.

When the path is the size and shape you want, release the mouse button but not the Alt or Option key. After the path closes, release the Alt or Option key. Select both paths Shift -click or drag around the two with the Selection tool.

Position the pointer where you want to begin from one path, and start dragging toward the other path. For best results, drag from one path to the other as if you were simply continuing the paths in the direction they were created.

Depending on where you begin to redraw the path and in which direction you drag, you may get unexpected results. For example, you may unintentionally change a closed path to an open path, change an open path to a closed path, or lose a portion of a shape. Double-click the Pencil tool to set any of the following options:. Controls how far you have to move your mouse or stylus before a new anchor point is added to the path. The Fidelity slider has five presets you can choose from.

The leftmost slider preset Accurate is most accurate for drawing paths. The rightmost slider preset Smooth creates the smoothest paths. Choose a preset that suits your drawing needs best.

Fill New Pencil Strokes. Applies a fill to pencil strokes you draw after selecting this option, but not to existing pencil strokes. Remember to select a fill before you draw the pencil strokes. When the endpoints of a path you are drawing are in close proximity and within a certain predefined number of pixels of each other, the path-close cursor is shown.

When you release the mouse button, such a path is closed automatically. You can set the predefined number of pixels using this option. Edit Selected Paths. Give it a Fill color. I’m going to give this one a Fill color of blue, just because it’s a whale. I’m going to continue with drawing this now with the Curve Tool. Let’s have a look at adjusting this thing. There are times when you’re like, actually just didn’t do what I want. You can grab the Curve Tool, and go in, and go– actually this guy just needs to be, maybe up here.

I can try and get him to blend a bit nicer. They’ll work, or I can undo, and grab my White Arrow. The Direct Selection Tool, grab this guy and go, what’s going on here, and go– this guy needs to be coming straight out of the back of this one.

And this one needs to go a bit higher. So it’s up to you how you best want to do it but let’s continue on. Double click, click once. Click once. Pretty nice. Double click for a corner. I’ll show you one little trick, because this is getting boring. It’s great, but let me show you a little trick you can do. Say you want these– for some reason I draw these leafy things all the time, if you’ve watched me in my tutorials.

Leafy kind of things. It’s meant to be water, by the way. But what I can do is, see this guy here, I can grab the Curvature Tool, and remember, if I want to change it from a curve to a corner, remember, if I get it wrong, I just double click it.

I find that’s kind of cool. Especially that one, that kind of leafy shape, with one end pointing. Especially if it’s balanced, it’s quite tough to do. Now if you’re getting bored you can skip to the next video now.

I’m going to delete that. I’ll just go double click. I’m going to zoom in. Curve, Double click. One click, double click. Driving myself mad now, click once. I’m going to draw– we’re going to start with this guy on the right here, we’re going to draw the basic. Let’s say I want to draw this circle. And, click and drag for a curve. Can you see, it actually flexes. So it’s not only adjusting this one, it’s actually adjusting the next one to continue a nice smooth curve. I can drag this one and try and get it a little nicer. Drag this illistrator in. Don’t know what I’m trying to do.
